Lithospheric Biosphere Dynamics and Implications for Astrobiology

Over 99.97% of life on Earth depends on solar energy, including deep subsurface ecosystems sustained by photosynthetically derived compounds. However, before photosynthesis emerged, life primarily relied on chemical energy. Understanding non-photosynthetic microbial ecosystems today remains a challenge.

To explore early metabolic constraints, we focus on the "lithospheric biosphere," where photosynthetic influence is minimal. Our research examines energy flow between the lithosphere and biosphere and the microbial metabolisms it sustains. These insights enhance our understanding of early Earth’s microbial life and provide perspectives on habitability on other rocky planets. We also develop compact, high-performance instruments for astrobiological exploration.
